History Tyrone Township
Tyrone Township was established in 1855
and is located in the northwest section of Kent County.
A rural/urban township with a population of 4,731; Tyrone
Township is part of an area known as “The Ridge”. “The
Ridge” has prime, unique and valuable agricultural
land because of its relationship to Lake Michigan along
with the rolling topography which provides improved frost
protection. Principal crops on “The Ridge” include
apples, vegetables, and dairy as well as beef cattle.
Tyrone Township offers many beautiful
attractions, such as the Rogue River, which runs through
the eastern part of the township. Other features include
our Fire & Rescue Department, Library, and Historical
There are 4,428.5 acres of DNR State
Land along with beautifully marked nature trails and
an airport. Two cemeteries, Idlewild and Chubbuck (Pinewood),
are also located in Tyrone Township.
Tyrone Township hosts three school districts:
Kent City Community Schools, Sparta Area Schools, Grant
Public Schools, and one private school – Algoma
Tyrone Township welcomes and encourages
resident involvement in the community. We offer many
programs and rely on volunteers associated with the Historical
Society and Library. Residents may serve on appointed
boards or commissions within the township and have the
opportunity to make decisions on important public issues.
Some of these opportunities to serve the community are
Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, Board of
Review, Site-Plan Review and Construction Board of Appeals.
