History Tyrone Township

Tyrone Township was established in 1855 and is located in the northwest section of Kent County. A rural/urban township with a population of 4,731; Tyrone Township is part of an area known as “The Ridge”. “The Ridge” has prime, unique and valuable agricultural land because of its relationship to Lake Michigan along with the rolling topography which provides improved frost protection. Principal crops on “The Ridge” include apples, vegetables, and dairy as well as beef cattle.

Tyrone Township offers many beautiful attractions, such as the Rogue River, which runs through the eastern part of the township. Other features include our Fire & Rescue Department, Library, and Historical Group.

There are 4,428.5 acres of DNR State Land along with beautifully marked nature trails and an airport. Two cemeteries, Idlewild and Chubbuck (Pinewood), are also located in Tyrone Township.

Tyrone Township hosts three school districts: Kent City Community Schools, Sparta Area Schools, Grant Public Schools, and one private school – Algoma Christian Schools.

Tyrone Township welcomes and encourages resident involvement in the community. We offer many programs and rely on volunteers associated with the Historical Society and Library. Residents may serve on appointed boards or commissions within the township and have the opportunity to make decisions on important public issues. Some of these opportunities to serve the community are Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, Board of Review, Site-Plan Review and Construction Board of Appeals.
